Matilde Ciani

Matilde Ciani joined the EPG in September 2026 as a PhD Candidate.
Her work is funded by the external page NCCR-CLIM+ - Climate Extremes and Society. Her research focuses on innovation and technology supply chains to build resilience toclimate extremes.

Matilde holds a Master’s degree from the Double Degree Program at
external page Bocconi and external page Sciences Po Paris in International Economics. Her master’s thesis, under external page Gianmarco Ottaviano’s supervision, focused on global trade and the response to changes in relative energy prices in the sectors that are covered by the Carbon Border Adjustment mechanism. Before that, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in international relations at the external page University of Florence, where she developed a passion for quantitative methods and economics. During her studies, she worked at the external page International Energy Agency, and as a data analyst for a humanitarian NGO, external page IMPACT Initiatives.

Prior to joining EPG, she completed a pre-doc at the external page Kiel Institute, Berlin, under the supervision of external page Moritz Schularick, focusing on innovation and energy economics. She authored a policy brief on the mismatch between ambitions and energy plans in Europe regarding AI and data centers.

In her spare time, Matilde can be found either outdoors pretending to enjoy sports, such as running, hiking or skiing, or indoors cooking, reading a book or being humbled by the process of learning German.
