Jonas Beck joined the Energy and Technology Policy Group (EPG) as a PhD candidate in October 2026. His research focuses on grid-scale and long-duration energy storage. He studies how technology characteristics such as design and manufacturing complexity shape the learning rates of different storage technologies, and where that learning takes place. He also examines how innovation, industrial and energy policy influence which storage technologies become competitive. His work is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network external page RESTORATIVE.
Jonas holds an M.Sc. in Management & Technology with a minor in Sustainable Energy from the external page Technical University of Munich (TUM). He also holds a B.Sc. in International Management from a double degree programme between external page ESB Business School Reutlingen and external page Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid. For his master’s thesis at the external page Research Center for Energy Economics (FfE), he studied how grid connection affects the cost of green hydrogen production in potential export countries such as Chile. He has received scholarships from the external page German Academic Scholarship Foundation and the external page German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Before joining EPG, Jonas interned at the external page German Embassy in Santiago de Chile, working on green hydrogen diplomacy, and at external page Agere Energy & Infrastructure Partners, where he carried out valuations of renewable and storage projects.
In his free time, Jonas packs too much gear onto his gravel bike, goes trekking or plays chess. Having refereed handball for eight years, he is used to making decisions that half the room disagrees with.
